Optomap® Retinal Exam

What Does an Optomap® Retinal Exam Involve?
The Optomap® is a digital image of the retina produced by Optos scanning laser technology. Like film in a camera, the retina is a thin tissue at the back of the eye that takes the images and light you see and sends that information to the brain so it can process it. Because it has such an important job, damage to the retina can be detrimental for someone’s vision and early detection of these problems is key.
An Optomap is currently the only technology that can capture an 82 percent view of the retina at one time. This analysis of the retina provides your doctor with valuable insights beyond an annual eye examination alone.
An Optomap® retinal exam provides the following:
- A closer look at your eye health
- Early detection of various eye diseases that, if left unchecked, may lead to vision loss
- An overview or map of the retina that provides a detailed view to your doctor
Getting Your Optomap® Retinal Scan
An Optomap® retinal exam is usually an add-on to a traditional exam and is quick, comfortable, and painless. No equipment touches your eye, making it suitable for individuals of all ages, even children. In many cases, when you get an Optomap® retinal exam, dilation is not needed in many cases, but your doctor will make the final decision and guide you through the process if necessary.
During your Optomap® eye exam, you will begin by looking into the imaging device one eye at a time. You will then see a flash of light, which lets you know that the image has been taken. Afterward your eye doctor will review the image with you, noting areas of concern if present.
Because the image is available right away, you will have the opportunity to review and discuss your Optomap® retinal imaging with your doctor at the time of your appointment. A record of the image will also be kept in your medical file, giving your optometrist the opportunity to make comparisons between images if potential issues arise at future exams.
