Why Do I Feel Like There’s Sand in My Eyes?

Jan 1, 2024 | Dry Eye

Do you ever feel like there’s sand in your eyes? It’s called ‘gritty eyes’ and it’s a very common issue. It’s an annoying and uncomfortable feeling that can have different causes. From allergies to dry eyes, knowing what’s causing it can help you find relief. In this post, we’ll explore the possible causes and treatments for gritty eyes.

1. Allergies

Allergies can often cause gritty eyes, as well as other symptoms such as itchy, watery, and red eyes. A variety of factors can trigger allergies, including pollen, dust, pet dander, or specific foods. If you think allergies might be causing your symptoms, try over-the-counter antihistamines or schedule an appointment with your doctor.

2. Pink eye

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, happens when the thin layer covering the white part of your eye gets infected or inflamed. It can make your eyes itchy, red, watery, and feel like there’s sand in them. A number of treatment options are available, including antibiotic drops, compresses, and antiviral medications.

3. Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a common eye condition that makes your eyelids red, puffy, and irritated. It can also cause a gritty feeling in your eyes. Blepharitis can be caused by bacterial infections or seborrheic dermatitis, and treatment options include warm compresses, eyelid scrubs, and antibiotics.

4. Contact lens wear

Using contact lenses incorrectly can also make your eyes feel gritty. Sleeping with contacts, using old or expired lenses, and not cleaning them properly can all contribute to this discomfort. If you wear contacts and your eyes feel like there’s sand in them, take a break from wearing them and schedule an appointment with your optometrist.

5. Dry eye syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where your eyes don’t produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears. This can lead to an uncomfortable gritty sensation in the eyes, as well as burning, stinging, and redness. Many factors can lead to dry eye, including aging, hormonal changes, certain medications, and environmental factors such as wind and air conditioning. Treatment options include eye drops, warm compresses, and lifestyle changes like using a humidifier at home and wearing sunglasses on windy days.
