What is the Connection Between Hormones and Eye Health?

Jun 1, 2023 | Eye Health Info

Hormones are powerful chemicals that regulate various bodily functions, including eye health. In fact, hormonal imbalances can have a significant impact on our vision and eye health. Let’s take a look at the link between hormones and eye health and what you can do to maintain healthy vision.

Female hormones and eye health

Women go through many hormonal changes throughout their lives, including during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. These hormonal changes can cause fluctuations in vision and eye health. During pregnancy, for example, women’s bodies can produce higher levels of estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes can sometimes lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, or even a change in prescription for glasses or contact lenses. During menopause, women may experience similar changes as their hormone levels decrease.

Thyroid hormones and eye health

Our thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that help regulate our metabolism and energy levels. However, if it produces too much or too little of these hormones, it can cause some eye problems. For example, if the thyroid gland becomes overactive, or hyperthyroidism, we may experience symptoms like dryness, irritation, or even bulging eyes. This is known as Graves’ eye disease and requires treatment by an eye doctor.

Testosterone and eye health

While testosterone is often associated with male characteristics, women also produce this hormone in smaller amounts. Testosterone is essential for maintaining healthy vision, especially as we get older. Low testosterone levels in men have been linked to an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can cause vision loss in older adults.

Taking care of your hormonal and eye health

Taking care of our hormonal and eye health requires a bit of effort, but it’s worth it to keep our bodies functioning at their best! Making small lifestyle changes like eating a diet rich in antioxidants, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep can all help regulate our hormone levels and promote healthy vision.

And of course, regular eye exams are key to catching any eye problems early on and keeping our eyes healthy. If you’re dealing with a hormonal condition like thyroid disease or diabetes, it’s important to work closely with your healthcare provider to manage your condition and prevent any potential eye problems.

As you can see, hormones play a critical role in maintaining the health of your eyes. By keeping track of your hormonal health, you can ensure that you are taking the best possible care of your eyes. If you have any concerns about your eye health, be sure to schedule an eye exam with our eye doctors in Gonzales
